Top 5 celebrities involved in environmental causes

 




Recent research conducted by CNBC shows that there are 15 celebrities actively involved in tackling environmental issues. Here I want to introduce you to the top 5 celebrities most involved in saving.

Leonardo DiCaprioDiCaprio actively participates in several environmental committees, such as the Natural Resources Defense Council, Global Green USA, World Wildlife Fund and the International Fund for Animal Welfare.
As an environmentalist, DiCaprio recently launched the campaign “Hands Off My Parts” in collaboration with the WWF. The campaign has the aim of raising public awareness on the issue of illegal trade in wildlife, such as the ivory trade. The campaign has demands that Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra to ban all trade in ivory in Thailand so as to contain the illegal killing of African elephants. Moreover the actor has co-written, produced, and narrated the global warming film “The 11th Hour”. Finally, since 1998, he has also owned the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation which aim which lobbies incessantly for a variety of environmental and humanitarian issues, including forest preservation, healthy oceans, clean water access, and renewable energy.

Gisele Bundchen
The Brazilian model is very active in environmental topics. She raised funds for conservation efforts in the Atlantic and Amazon Rainforest thanks to the eco-friendly flip-flop line – Ipanema Gisele Bundchen – that she created.
Thanks to her work in ecological conservation and education, the model was nominated for the Best Green International Celebrity in December 2011.
In the same year the model was also nominated for the year’s Global Environmental Citizen by Harvard’s Centre for Health and Global Environment. Gisele also participates in the United Nations Environment Program and also launched a project to restore vegetation and micro-basins in Horizontina (Brazil), Clean Water Project. 

Cate BlanchettThe actress and her husband became co-artist directors in the project Greening the Wharf. The project was created by the Sydney Theatre Company with the aim of investing in solar energy, rainwater harvesting, energy efficiency measures, waste management best practice and promoting an environmentally responsible theatre production. Thanks to this project 1,900 solar panels were installed in The Wharf Theatre at Sydney's Walsh Bay and they now provide 70 percent of the theatre’s electricity requirements. Thanks to Cate, the theatre has now also started reusing and recycling costumes and props.

Maroon 5In 2006 the band was honoured at the Environmental Media Awards for their commitment to “green touring” – using biodiesel-powered tour buses, organic food, recycled goods at concert venues – and donated a portion of ticket sales to “Global Cool”, an environmental association that tries to reduce CO2 emissions. Maroon 5 have also played at Live Earth and support causes and organisations including the Environmental Media Association, Global Cool, Kiva, Teen Impact and Moveon.

Edward NortonThe actor that delivered an interesting interpretation of the “Incredible Hulk” is environmentally active. In fact he has worked as the United Nations Goodwill Ambassador for Biodiversity since 2010 when he was nominated. At his designation ceremony, Norton affirmed that environmental issues are the “defining challenge of this era”. The actor launched the web site "crowdrise.com” to draw people’s attention to certain topics. Moreover, Norton is widely recognised for his work on the BP Solar Neighbours Program, which allows increasing funds for solar-energy homes, with solar panels for low-income families.
Finally he supports many movements/associations such as the Wilderness Society and Earthjustice, the National Geographic series called Strange Days on Planet Earth and is a member of Friends of the High Line. Furthermore he supports Avoided Deforestation Partners, Earth Day Network, Global Green, Greenpeace, Maasai Wilderness Conservation Trust and Solar Neighbours Program.
